Welcome to the Wilderness

I traveled to Alaska right after 8th grade, so many moons go. My impression of that trip was although it’s a beautiful place, it’s not somewhere I really care about. Oh, how a few years can change that. In early August, my family (parents, sister, brother, cousin grandma) all traveled to Juneau for a few days then onto Whalers Cove to go fishing. Juneau was a very neat city that I had seen,  but only from the cruise ship perspective. To go and spend a few leisurely days was incredible. It is beautiful, the wildlife is amazing and the people all seem to have such interesting stories.
Pretty scenery!

However, Juneau was not the highlight of our trip. We took a sea plane (which is definitely as awesome as it looks in movies!) to Whalers Cove where we set our bags down and immediately went fishing. I’m not a big fisherwoman, but it was a blast! Every few minutes you were reeling something in and seemed they kept getting bigger and bigger. We also saw a ton of whales which were not scared of our teensy little boat!

The next day, the girls took another short plane ride to Sitka to shop and walk around the town. It was a very pretty town although the bathrooms were very difficult to find.

(I still haven't downloaded the pictures from Sitka....woops)

Our last day at the lodge was my favorite. My brother, cousin and I all went freshwater fishing. This mean we had a boat ride, then hiked with all of our gear across a huge meadow to get to the good fishing spots where the salmon were going to spawn. It was like a free for all. There were thousands of fish and every time we threw a line in, we caught something (I did however catch way more than the boys!). We also saw three bears, one of which was only about 100 yards away.

That brown dot in the center is the bear...Didn't have a very good camera (it was MUCH closer then it looks)

Ross, my brother, fly fishing

It was a beautiful spot!

After this fun and exciting day it was time to head home, where I immediately had to starts classes.
More on senior year in the next blog.
